The Quad City Mallards have acquired defenseman Desmond Bergin from the Greenville Swamp Rabbits in exchange for forward Jack Nevins, the Mallards announced today.

Bergin, 24, scored seven goals and added 19 assists for 26 points while posting a plus/minus rating of plus-8 in 60 games as a rookie last season.

Bergin spent four seasons at Harvard before turning professional. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound Natick, Massachusetts, native was named to the 2015-16 All-Ivy League Second Team after picking up ten assists in 34 games while helping Harvard to a second straight NCAA tournament berth. 2014-15 had not only seen Bergin and the Crimson qualify for the NCAA tournament but also claim the ECAC Hockey tournament title. Bergin produced four goals, 24 assists and 28 points over 117 career collegiate games.

Bergin played 16 junior games- 15 for the Tri-City Storm and one for the Dubuque Fighting Saints- in the United States Hockey League in 2011-12 after three seasons of prep hockey at St. Sebastian’s School.

Nevins, 23, last season scored 11 times and collected 13 assists for 24 points in 61 games. The 6-foot-1, 207-pound Stittsville, Ontario native also led the Mallards with 122 penalty minutes.

Nevins joined the Mallards after two seasons in the American Hockey League. He scored four times and collected 101 penalty minutes in 59 games with the Rochester Americans in 2015-16. In 2014-15, Nevins split his first full professional season between the Americans and the Hamilton Bulldogs after breaking in with the Bulldogs at the end of the 2013-14 campaign.

Nevins first arrived in Hamilton immediately after completing a three-year junior career, during which he saw action for the Sarnia Sting, Kingston Frontenacs and London Knights in the Ontario Hockey League and the Prince Edward Island Rocket/Charlottetown Islanders and Rouyn-Noranda Huskies in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

The Mallards will open their twenty-first season- and their fourth in the ECHL- on Friday, October 13 against the Toledo Walleye at the iWireless Center. Mallards 2017-18 season tickets are now available. Season ticket holders enjoy significant savings of the walk-up ticket price and receive a host of exclusive benefits.
