The Quad City Mallards have re-signed defenseman Matt Duffy, the Mallards announced today.

Duffy, 28, last season scored a career-high 11 goals to finish tied for seventh among Central Hockey League defensemen.  The 6’ 2”, 200-pound Windham, Maine, native totaled 25 points and posted a plus/minus rating of +5 while missing just one of the Mallards’ 66 regular season games.

Duffy also played a key role in the Mallards’ playoff march to the club’s first semi-final berth in 11 years.  His overtime goal gave the Mallards a vital game two road victory over the Rapid City Rush in the opening round of the postseason.  The Mallards would go on to take that series in seven games.  Duffy recorded a total of five points (one goal and four assists) in nine playoff games.

“We’re very excited to have Matt back because he brings so much to our line-up,” said Mallards coach and general manager Terry Ruskowski.  “He can play in just about any situation.  He’s very dependable in his own zone, he’s also an important guy on our power play and his experience is a big asset for us on the ice and in the locker room.”

Duffy has played exactly 150 regular season games for the Mallards since joining the Flock midway through the 2011-12 campaign.  He has scored 23 times and added 55 assists for 78 points in a Mallard uniform.  In his first full season in the Quad Cities- 2012-13- Duffy set a career high by finishing fourth among CHL blue liners with 42 points.  Duffy debuted for the Mallards in January of 2012 after mononucleosis kept him off the ice for the first half of that season.  He scored three goals and totaled 11 points in 21 games in 2011-12.

Duffy was originally selected by the Florida Panthers in the fourth round of the 2005 National Hockey League Entry Draft with the one hundred fourth overall choice.  After a four-year collegiate career at the University of Maine, Duffy broke into professional hockey at the tail end of the 2008-09 season, seeing time with both the American Hockey League’s Rochester Americans and the ECHL’s Florida Everblades.  The following year, in his first full pro campaign, Duffy produced five goals and 14 points in 52 games with the Everblades and scored once and registered five points in 11 games with the Americans.

Duffy split the bulk of the 2010-11 season between the ECHL’s Kalamazoo Wings and Gwinnett Gladiators and also played two games for the Portland Pirates of the AHL.  He scored four goals and totaled 10 points in 56 ECHL games.

Duffy played 165 career games at Maine, scoring 21 goals and notching 43 points.  He went to the Frozen Four with the Black Bears each of his first two years at Orono.  Duffy enjoyed his most productive season as a collegian when he scored seven goals and totaled 17 points in 39 games as a senior in 2008-09.
