Ivan Kulbakov set a Quad City Mallard club record for most saves in an ECHL game by stopping 57 shots in regulation and overtime and then turned aside all three Idaho Steelhead shootout bids as the host Mallards (2-3-0) outlasted the Steelheads (2-2-2) 3-2 in the shootout Friday night.

The Mallards' Tristan King- who had two assists in regulation- scored the only goal of the shootout.

After both teams scored twice in the first period, Kulbakov kept Idaho off the scoreboard for the final 45 minutes of play before the shootout by delivering 44 straight saves. He came up with 20 stops in the third period alone and delivered seven more in sudden death. Idaho goaltender Philippe Desrosiers was likewise faultless over the final two periods of regulation and in overtime. He finished the evening with 23 saves.

It was the Steelheads who opened the scoring while on the power play when Henrik Samuelsson buried a rebound two minutes and 54 seconds into the game. The Mallards were on the advantage when Josh MacDonald tied the score from the side of the net at 9:08 of the opening period. Sam Warning then gave the Mallards a 2-1 lead by jumping on a rebound at 14:08 of the first. The Steelheads' Justin Parizek tipped the puck home to knot the contest at two with just 24 seconds left in the period.

Kulbakov broke the previous team record of 45 saves in a single ECHL game originally set by Evan Mosher on November 9, 2021 against the Brampton Beast and matched by C.J. Motte on November 19, 2021 against the Wheeling Nailers. Kulbakov also established a new league season high for saves in one contest, eclipsing the old mark of 45 stops set by the Norfolk Admirals' Jake Paterson against the Steelheads on October 13.

The Mallards and Steelheads meet again tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. at the TaxSlayer Center. Children attending tomorrow evening’s rematch will have the opportunity to take part in intermission trick-or-treating on the ice.
